2 Foodies

2 Foodies is the most unconventional restaurant you’ll ever come across in Sydney. It’s a little diner, located next to a petrol station, with a dingy atmosphere and loud Vietnamese pop music. And yet, never judge a book by its cover.

You know the saying ‘the dirtier the Chinese restaurant, the more authentic it is’? In this case, it’s true 🤣. The food is fucking amazing!!

A friend recommended it to us and on arrival, we were really taken aback. We didn’t expect to see a piece of Vietnam in the South-West suburbs of Sydney (that was not in Cabramatta) HAHAHA. They only serve 3 items with variety, but goddamn, it’s always a good feed at 2 Foodies.

This was a bánh mì (pork roll) with a twist of crackling pork belly. It was so friggin’ good. There are usually three types of pork in a classic bánh mì but by swapping out for the pork belly, the bite was rich and creamy and sloppy, hells yeah 😍.

The vegetables and chilli helped cut through the pork fat so it was not too overwhelming to chew. The bread roll was fresh and not too thick either. Every bite was well balanced and delicious.
There are not many places in Sydney that do a good bò kho (roast beef stew). It is normally a home dish made by Mum. In this stew, the beef was large chunks of braised meat and was very tender. The stew was rich and savoury, with hints of ginger, onions and other herbs. They definitely use a bit of MSG.

The consistency was very thick, ideal for dipping with the fresh bread rolls. Even though 2 Foodies originated from South Vietnam, this stew had subtle influences of Hue, middle Vietnam, with its dominating spice, herbs and strong flavouring.
This is what 2 Foodies is known for, their phở đặc biệt (special beef noodle soup). Unlike a simple phở of just rare beef, the special has rare beef, tendons, brisket, meatballs and tripe. The broth was intense, having soaked in all the bits of the cow for hours. They used a lot of herbs and MSG too, developing this rich and savoury broth that was so addicting we could not stop slurping it down 🤤.

We could really taste the aromatic star anise – an intense spice that is often dulled down at other Vietnamese restaurants. We added bean sprouts, lemon and hoisin sauce to get the perfect bite of phở.

Highly recommend! And this large bowl is still $12; so rare to come across these days.

review

If you’re looking for authentic Vietnamese dishes, give 2 Foodies a go. It does look off-putting, seeing the state of the restaurant and its location but trust, the food is good and reminds us of Vietnam.

Thanks for reading! Happy eating 😆
