Street Kart (previously known as MariCar) is famous for their real life go-karts on Japan’s city streets, with drivers dressed in characters like Mario, Pikachu, Yoshi, etc. They went viral in 2016 and since then, have been a popular tourist attraction. Tickets were ¥80,000 (~$100 AUD).
We’ve ridden MariCar three times now. The YouTube video below is from our 2017 visit and these photos were from March 2020. As you can see, they’ve upgraded their karts in the years, due to being sued by Nintendo.
Tonight, our driver, Adam, from the Shinagawa branch, told us that it was his last ride and that Street Kart suffered a big financial blow with the lawsuit and the pandemic. They will be closing their doors permanently until further notice.

After we registered and checked our passports and international driver’s license, we changed into one of the onesies available. There were onesies and go-pro gear on sale too. After that, Adam and his colleagues set up our karts and explained the basic instructions and off we went on our 3-hour scenic drive around Tokyo.
It was very solemn driving around, knowing we were the lucky few who got to experience the go-karts for the last time 😔. We hope the company manages to pull through and open back up. We loved the thrill and the adrenaline on the road, as exhibited in our Tokyo Drift video below. It was so fun to drive the go-karts
