Tromsø is a beautiful city located north of Norway. It’s part of the Arctic Circle, a well-known place to view the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. We spent two nights here and absolutely loved the vibe! The people we encountered were really friendly and helpful, especially the taxi driver who went out of his way to make sure we saw the lights.
Our Adventure
On Thursday we walked around and explore the scenery and shops. It was a still-coldness and our fingers were freezing up after a few minutes of photo taking. The good thing about travelling in Winter, however, is no crowds! It felt really peaceful to wander around aimlessly.
The bad thing about Tromsø? Everything is expensive, especially the unique experiences like the reindeer experience, Aurora Borealis tours and dog sledging. There is also a 25% VAT fee, meaning we paid a lot of tax on our meals. Our lunch at Art Cafe was more pricey than we predicted (LINK).
A taxi would’ve been the best way to get around Tromsø but to save money after lunch, we walked along the harbours to soak in the landscape views. We saw the Arctic Cathedral but chose to stay on this side of the bridge 😅.
In the evening we had dinner near the Comfort Hotel Xpress Tromsø. After we finished, we were walking dejectedly towards a bar to try aquavit because we had given up hope in our Aurora Borealis search. And then, as if by magic, we looked up and saw a hint of the green lights 😍.
We rushed home, did 15-minute thorough research, and caught a 6-min taxi ride to the frozen lake, Prestvannet (LINK). We spent 30 minutes taking as many photos as possible and when the lights danced away, we realised we had lost the contact card the taxi driver had given us. We had no way of catching a taxi from the lake and our phones had lost signal.
Our survival instincts kicked in and we started walking towards the hotel. It felt like forever but in reality, it was a freezing 15-minute walk. When we got back, I realised my ankles were bleeding and the blood had frozen up into my socks 😂😅 Lessons learned: always have a return trip planned.

We flew out of Tromsø on Friday at 7 AM. We will never book an early flight again unless absolutely necessary. We were beyond exhausted. If time and money wasn’t an issue, we would have spent another day or two in Tromsø. Hopefully, we can go back and visit in the future.
