I had a family reunion with my elderly relatives tonight and this is what we ate. The dinner was located on the ground floor of a major hotel.
Food
The staff, in action, preparing our peking duck rolls.
Peking duck rolls are composed of a thick piece of duck meat, with duck skin, cucumber, spring onion, wrapped in a thin rice paper and dunked in hoisin sauce. It was a very delicious appetiser.
This was grilled prawns with savoury vermicelli noodles. The noodles were soft and saucy. And the chives added a nice garlic profile. The prawns were very satisfying to eat and suck from.
This was the rest of our Peking duck, grilled up with a light batter. They were large pieces, slightly dried out from the heat, and crispy AF.
This was a steamed sea bass, with ginger and shallots, drenched in a soy-based sauce. I really love this classic dish. It hit the right spot with some fried rice.
This was steamed buck Choi with chives and other herbs. We always have a vegetable dish to balance out the meal 😆
This was duck fried with Hokkien noodles. It was savoury and well balanced. The noodles had a soft texture.
Of course, there was a variety of fruit and chè bắp to end the night. Chè bắp is a sweet corn pudding with dribbles of coconut cream.
Review
This was a very fancy restaurant, especially for Vietnamese standards. Food was moderately good, nothing amazing. This would not have been my first choice considering the abundance of cheap street food available but alas, gotta listen to the elders 🤷🏻♀️.
