Happy New Year 2021

What a crazy year, for everyone. To say 2020 fucked us all up is an understatement.

This year was all about self-growth and learning we only need a handful of quality, amazing people in our lives ๐Ÿฅฐ.

January

โ€‹We were suffocating in bushfire smog here in Sydney. It was very difficult to breathe, even for our healthy young lungs. We spent this month melting away under the summer sun ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

February

Mick outdid himself and cooked this delicious meal on Valentine’s day (LINK).

We got a miracle with our very first omakase experience with Chef Sano at Sokyo ๐Ÿ˜ฑ (LINK). Also ate at Nomad (LINK) and went to our first, last and only rave of 2020; Transmission ๐Ÿ’”.

And our beautiful friends, N & A, got married in Hunter Valley ๐Ÿ˜ (LINK) where we also had wine tastings and the Muse coconut (LINK).

March

We flew to Japan with Aaron a few days before Australia announced shutdowns ๐Ÿคฃ. While everyone was panic buying and hoarding toilet paper, we were having a blast travelling around Tokyo (LINK) and Osaka (LINK):

  • First time upgraded to premium economy ๐Ÿคฉ
  • Day tripped to Niigata (LINK)
  • Day tripped to Yokohoma (LINK)
  • Riding Mariokart for the last time (they’ve shut down)
  • Dining with Chef Sato for a private omakase (LINK)
  • Seeing the full bloom of the cherry blossoms ๐ŸŒธ (LINK)
  • First time in business class on the Qantas 747’s last ride ever (discontinued)

April

We flew home right before the mandatory hotel quarantine so we were lucky to stay home in April, playing games and updating this blog ๐Ÿ›€๐Ÿป.

May

The next 4-5 months were one of the best for us. Sydney was easing out of lockdown restrictions and we bonded with our friends in a way that we never would have before ๐Ÿฅฐ.
I started learning how to cook (LINK) and delivered to our friends/family for feedback. In return, they made some awesome stuff ๐Ÿคค
T made savoury foods:

  • Ramen ๐Ÿœ
  • Banh canh cua ๐Ÿฆ€
    (crab udon noodle soup)
  • Hu tieu do bien ๐Ÿฒ
    (pork and seafood noodle soup)
A baked us so many desserts:

  • BSP watermelon cake ๐Ÿ‰
  • Durian mochi ice cream ๐Ÿฆ
  • Earl grey tea, durian & matcha choux ๐Ÿฅฏ
  • Brownies ๐Ÿซ
We also went overboard with a sashimi party (LINK) and an extensive foodie day trip where we stopped at 10 places in 4 hours ๐Ÿ˜‚ (LINK).

June

Restrictions were easing up more so we went on a few outdoor adventures. We cooked a lot too with taco night ๐ŸŒฎ, sukiyaki night ๐Ÿฅ˜ and KBBQ night ๐Ÿ–. This year’s anniversary dinner was at Bentley Restaurant (LINK).

July

The eating continued in July with truffle menus and Vietnamese fermented food (LINK).
N cooked up some delicious, juicy hamburgers ๐Ÿ”.

I started buying and caring for plants, like everyone else did during this period ๐Ÿ˜‚ and cooked up some takoyaki (LINK).

August

August was another blur of good food and good company ๐Ÿฅฐ

  • We went truffle hunting in Canberra (LINK)
  • Ate a Disney inspired menu at Nel. Restaurant (LINK)
  • Overindulged on more sashimi and fried chicken (LINK)

September

I underwent elective surgery and spent most of this month recovering.
PSA: don’t underestimate your health. Check for lumps.

October

We went to the Van Gogh Exhibition (LINK). I celebrated my birthday at Automata (LINK) and Cuppa (LINK) while Mick made Japanese curry ๐Ÿ›, pork crackling ๐Ÿท, Taiwanese beef noodle soup ๐Ÿœ, and bo kho ๐Ÿฅ˜.

November

We ate some more in November …

  • Chaco Bar ๐Ÿข (LINK)
  • Malabar for our Indian cravings ๐Ÿ› (LINK)
  • Baja Bills ๐ŸŒฎ

  • AYCE sushi for $35 ๐Ÿฃ
  • Mr Stone bowl ๐ŸŸ (LINK)
  • Kuro Anniversary Dinner ๐Ÿฆช (LINK)

December

And of course, more eating in the most seasonal month of the year. We had Tetsuya (LINK) and the Christmas Menu at Nel. Restaurant (LINK).

We flew business to Melbourne right before the NSW Covid outbreak and interstate border restrictions LOOOOL #LivingOnTheEdge. Some of the food we ate was:
  • Akaiito ๐Ÿฃ (LINK)
  • Calia ๐Ÿฑ (LINK)
  • Steer Dining Room ๐Ÿฅฉ (LINK)
  • And a fun day in Yarra Valley ๐Ÿท (LINK)
  • Saint Dreux ๐Ÿฅช (LINK)
  • Rice Paper Scissors ๐Ÿฅ— (LINK)
  • Tetsujin ๐Ÿค (LINK)
We hope 2021 will be kinder to everyone.
Stay safe, take care and happy new year! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’–
