It’s so good to have an authentic Malaysian restaurant in Sydney. Albee’s Kitchen is our latest find, serving some of the best and delicious comfort foods. We’ve eaten here 3 times in the last month because we love the authenticity of the dishes.

Food
These little scrumptious things were pandan chicken; a fried piece of pandan-marinated chicken wrapped in a banana leaf. The exterior was crispy. The pandan flavour was subtle. Overall it was a deliciously savoury bite.
This big salad was the rojak; a traditional Malaysian fruit and vegetable salad. It was Mick’s favourite ๐ฅ. There was a sweet umami coating over everything, almost like a caramelised sauce. There was also lingering notes of sourness and sharpness in the taste from the pineapple, fermented fish and lime. There was a mix of different textures like cold, dried pieces and thick, crunchy fruits.
This was otak oak, a South-East Asian grilled fish cake wrapped in a banana leaf. This fish meat was very juicy and fluffy, with a strong lemongrass flavour. It was juicier than the Vietnamese airy ones.
This was the nasi lamek with chicken. The rice was very fragrant, cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves. The chicken was savoury but a little dry. The sweet sauce had a hint of ginger.
Of course, we had to try the ubiquitous hainan chicken. The steamed chicken was oozing with a rich fatty flavour. The meat was silky and tender, having soaked up all the spices and chillies. We got the chicken on its own and shared it with plain rice.
This was the sambal water spinach, a popular Malaysian side dish similar to the Chinese snow pea shoots. These vegetables were stir-fried with sambal belacan (shrimp paste) to give off a spicy, fermented taste.
The fish head noodle soup was a bold umami and mildly sweet dish. It had a very creamy broth. The pickled mustard brought a soreness to the bite. The tomatoes sweetened everything. The salmon fish head was crispy and well-salted. It was fun to eat because we got to dig for the hidden vermicelli noodles underneath.
This was my favourite, the char ho fun ๐คค. This is a famous Malaysian dish with flat rice noodles charred in a wok and then stir-fried with pork, prawns and choy sum. A sweet broth and beaten eggs are added to give the creamy consistency. The meat was very tender, having swum around the eggy soup. I found the flavours very mild.
This bakuteh was surprisingly addicting. It was a very herbal and earthy broth, paired perfectly with soft fluffy rice. The texture was a thin consistency despite how rich in flavour the broth was. The innards and intestines were tender. And the goji berry flavour was predominant.
This was the curry chicken with potatoes and rice. The coconut milk was predominant, giving the curry that creamy consistency and depth of flavour. We loved how soft the meat and potatoes were.
Finally, this was the ipoh chicken horfum consisting of smooth flat noodles in a creamy egg soup. It was more of a broth compared to the char ho fun. It had a lighter texture and a blander taste. The chicken pieces were tender. It almost tasted like a Vietnamese chicken phแป but not as overwhelmingly heavy on the body.
Service
The service was typical of an Asian restaurant. It was a lot easier for A to communicate in Chinese than for us to speak English. They mainly spoke Mandarin.
Review
Overall, this was a really good lowkey Malaysian restaurant serving delicious and authentic food. The place looks a little ‘dirty’ but you know what they say, the dirtier the Asian restaurant, the better it is ๐๐.
We really love this place and will probably be back again soon.
Thanks for reading! Happy eating.
