Yering Station 2020

Yering Station is one of Victoria’s first wineries, established in 1838. We had lunch here because it was one of the only places in Yarra Valley that accepted a last-minute reservation on Christmas Eve πŸ˜‚.

We had the 2 courses for $68 pp.

EntrΓ©e

This was our first red for our wine tasting adventure today. It was a medium-bodied pinot noir with a crisp taste, perfect for the occasion.
For our bread and butter we had a soft sourdough with creamy truffle butter. It was rich and delicate, with a moderate amount of truffle flavour.
A and I ordered the scallops, corn foam, capsicum xo, and daikon. These scallops were lightly torched, not seared, which allowed it to retain its soft and fresh texture. The sauce was very foamy and buttery. The daikon slices were light with a mildly sweet taste. The touch of herbs brought forth this earthy flavour profile to the bite. It was very enjoyable.
The dudes ordered the kingfish, potato, onion oil, radish, and apple jelly. The kingfish had a lightly seared and slightly smokey flavour. It was drenched in this citric clam sauce that might have been a combination of the tangy apple jelly and sour radish. The watercress was an earthy accent and the toasted potatoes added a nice crunchy element.

Main Course

The dudes had matching orders again, getting the wagyu +3 eye fillet with shallots, tabasco salsa and potato as their main. This had a surcharge of $9. The wagyu was definitely a premium grade with tender meats and soft striations of fat. The mashed potato was well made with a beautifully creamy and buttery texture, scooped perfectly into a football 🀀. All the other accompaniments balanced out the fatty meats, making this a delicious dish.
I ordered the salmon with eggplant, fennel, leek and hazelnut pesto. I really enjoyed the soft flesh of the salmon with its moderately fishy taste however I thought all the components were a little above mediocre. Everything was cooked perfectly but there was nothing amazing in the gastronomy or creative department. The experience was quite average πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ. It felt like eating a fancy fish.
Our friend, A, had the kangaroo, beetroot, carrot puree, macadamia and pepper berry. The only feedback I got was that the kangaroo was gamey.

Service

The staff were formal, with attentive service. The server who took our order was the only one who interacted with us in a joking, fun way. Everyone else was solemn and systemically working.

Review

We thought the price was a little expensive for two dishes, especially considering the portion size however their location may have contributed to this inflation so we’ll look past it.

We considered Yering Station as a one-time dine-in meal. We’re not rushing to come back and eat here again anytime soon however if we do decide to visit Yarra Valley in the future, we’d definitely consider trying out their connected winery.

Thanks for reading and happy eating! πŸ˜‹
