Auvers Cafe

We popped into Auvers Cafe in Rhodes on Sunday with A and Ea and funny enough, the first time we brunched with Ea was at this cafe. We were having serious deja vu moments 😂.

Food

We always order the crab omelette now whenever we see it on the menu because we’re still wowed by the one from Humble Rays (LINK).

Auver’s crab omelette consisted of cheese, corn bonito mayonnaise and bruschetta on a toasted croissant for $20 and it was really nice. The omelette was cooked almost well done with the melted cheese stuffed inside, giving the bite that creamy finish. The mayonnaise was slightly sweet and balanced, having been oozed in smaller portions.

We enjoyed the refreshing cuts of tomatoes and herbs. The croissant was flakey and soft but it did become soggy after a short while. Overall, it was delicious but still fell under Humble Rays.

This was the chicken mushroom valley of chicken stuffed with mushrooms, spinach and cheese, served with potatoes fondant, muscatel, tarragon, mushroom crust and kombu cream sauce for $22.

Writing this out, I didn’t even realise there were mushrooms in this dish 😂 If you’ve been reading this blog, you’ll know I don’t like the fungus because of its distinct texture, however, I did enjoy this dish on Sunday. The chicken was a thick, juicy cut that masked the tenderised slices of mushroom. The earthy tarragon and sweet muscatel paired pleasantly with the savouriness of the chicken and mushroom combo, giving off a creamy and satisfying bite.

In particular, I enjoyed the potato fondant the most. The starchy potatoes were covered in a thick coat of buttery kombu sauce and wow, they were so addicting to eat 🤤.

This beautiful dish was their XO fried rice $24 consisting of prawns, radish, peas, corn, crackers, grilled zucchini, typhoon shelter crust and scrambled egg.

We were a little iffy about ordering a staple Chinese dish at a cafe but surprisingly, this dish was really delicious! 😋 The XO flavour was balanced and not overpowering at all. The rice was evenly coated in sauce, elevating the other main components in the dish.

The prawns were fat, juicy pieces with creamy flesh. The small pieces of corn, peas, tomatoes and zucchini were refreshing and sweet. The scrambled egg was creamy, melding everything into a beautiful, fulfilling bite. We loved the contrasting texture of the cracker.

Our last savoury dish was the soba beef curry of a slow-cooked beef, soba noodles, curry sauce, grilled zucchini, tomato salsa and parmesan crisps for $23.

This one was an enjoyable spicy ride. The slow-cooked beef was tender, falling apart easily with our forks. The soba noodles were fairly soft, coated in the rich curry sauce. I found the chilli tolerable for my basic palate. Either the spice level was in the zilch-to-mild range or my tolerance has gotten better 🤔 (I can’t even eat siracha tho… HAHA).

We loved the unique presentation of the dish. The parmesan crisps were a crunchy contrast to the softness of the noodles and meat.

Finally, we ordered the tiramisu french toast for $21. This was a brioche cake with tiramisu cream, fresh berries, oreo soil, candied orange and orange sorbet 🍰.

The cake texture was fluffy and airy with a slightly burnt exterior (like the crust of a french toast). The tiramisu flavour infused into the cream was moderate and mildly sweet. The fruits were fresh and a mix of sweet and sour notes. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Drink

We ordered a cold drip filter coffee $6 and the Great Barrier Reef $7.

The cold drip was quite strong with a bitter taste than our usual home cold brew.
The Great Barrier Reef was a watermelon, orange, pineapple, lemon and granny smith apple juice. It was refreshing but nothing mindblowing.

Service

The staff were really friendly and were able to seat us within 30 minutes despite our lack of reservation during these tough Covid times.

Review

We loved this cafe. We’ve only ever been to the Rhodes location but every single visit has been pleasant. The menu is not as extensive as the Darlinghurst location however what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality with delicious food.

Thanks for reading! Happy eating 😁
