Berlin, Germany 2019

One of the biggest decisions I made in 2019 was booking a visit to Berlin for one. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone and travel in a foreign country and as a female solo traveller, I was scared shitless.

Berlin is a modernised city, recently redeveloped after the remnants of WWII and the devastation of the Berlin Wall (only taken down in 1989). The citizens were friendly and polite. Actually, Berlin was fun – I remember seeing a bench with 10 dudes drinking beer, except this bench was on a giant bicycle running along the streets, being pedalled by all of them.

This is my travel diary from Saturday till today.

Our adventure

It took 2 hours to fly from London to Berlin on Saturday. Once I landed, I found it very overwhelming and exciting to read all the German words at the airport. Young 14-year-old me, who took a German class for 6 months, was thrilled because I got to say out loud nein mein hamburger without sounding like a weirdo 🤣.

I took a taxi to Mercure Berlin Tempelhof and checked in, thinking I was going to meet my tour soon (LINK) 😅.

When I realised I had the afternoon to myself, I took public transport to visit Gendarmenmarkt to take photos (LINK).
I found Restaurant Maximilians Berlin for a satisfying hearty beef and mash dinner (LINK).

I was a little intimidated and scared, being alone for the first time in a foreign country, so I was afraid to stay out too late. I took public transport back to my hotel and was chilling in my room from 8 PM. I wished I had bought some desserts and snacks though… I was getting quite hungry that night 🥺.
The next morning I had breakfast at the hotel buffet. It was not bad but I was definitely feeling the loneliness and missing Mick.
I met my tour group and the tour bus arrived to take us to the Memorial of Holocaust (LINK).
Then we went to the Brandenburg Gate. This gate was the only entrance for the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1991 and is an iconic symbol of the city. I was very impressed by this parrot 🦜.
The tour guide took us to see Checkpoint Charlie next, the best-known crossing point between the East and West of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. There was a large air service balloon in the distance and all I could think of was Die Bart, Die from the Simpsons 😂.
We stopped by to see the Berlin Wall too (LINK).
After a disappointing lunch (like, look how dry that burger looked 😑….) the tour bus dropped us off at Berliner Fernsehturm where we were given 4 hours to roam and explore (LINK).
I was chilling in this square until I noticed a group of young girls wandering about, scamming people. One of the girls, approx. 14 years old, came up to me and asked for a donation for hearing impairment charity.

When I offered her 5€ (as that was all I had), she said it was a minimum of 10€. I found it odd so I tried getting my money back but then the girl said “oh, it’s okay” and walked off with it. Sighhhhh, I got scammed by the classic thief trick 🤦🏻‍♀️
The exterior of the Berlin Cathedral was very grand and pretty to admire. I started wandering towards the Alte Nationalgalerie where I ended up doing a solo 45 min photoshoot 😂 (LINK).
“To the Victims of Wars and of the Rule of Violence” at the Berlin National Memorial
This was just a random apartment building I took a photo of but the editing process was so fun and aesthetically pleasing 😄
I’m not too sure where this was or how I ended up here but it was very beautiful. I loved the colourful buildings. I stopped by Tigertörtchen for a coffee and some cupcakes 🧁 (LINK).
These bears were everywhere and each one was unique. I took selfies with a few 😂.
Not gonna lie, wandering around a foreign city alone got very tiring. By my 3rd hour, I was cold and ready to head to my hotel but since I had committed to travelling solo, I had to see it through. I ducked into Zur Gerichtslaube for warmth and delicious German sausage (LINK).
In the evening, I walked back to Berliner Fernsehturm to meet up with my tour group. A random German man approached me asking for my number and even though I declined, he kept insisting we get coffee 😳… Dude. I leave Berlin tomorrow… Mick was laughing at me over text 😑.
On Monday I had breakfast at the hotel again and hopped on the bus for Dresden (LINK).

My time in Berlin was short, but as the saying goes, it was very sweet. I really hope I can come back with Mick one day. I love Germany 😍.

Danke fürs lesen, auf wiedersehen!
