French food? Say less. We finally ticked off another one of Sydney’s popular French restaurants, Bistro Rex located in Potts Point. The ambiance was perfect for a date night: moody, romantic and tight, just like the narrow streets of Paris. We spent about $100 per person, a la carte.
Food

We spoiled ourselves with a dozen of Sydney Rock oysters for $6.50 each.

This was the wagyu tartare 2gr, small size $33. This was MS9+ wagyu with spices, finely chopped chives, and the creamiest salty egg yolk. We chose to have this with French fries. The other option was brioche and a large serving for $56.

This triple cheese souffle for $30 was so unique. The centre was light and airy. It did get overwhelming halfway through, as it was comté, gruyere, camembert in a pudding shape, but it was still so delicious and rich.

This was the dish of the night, the moreton bay bug omelette for $39. W-O-W! This was the fluffiest omelette – somehow both airy and creamy, with pockets of fresh and sweet moreton bay bug, drenched in a flavourful umami sauce with roe and spring onions. It was so good, we wanted a seocnd serving but knew the butter intake would be through the roof on this one. We will come back for this dish.

We wanted to see how the French cook lamb so we got the kinross lamb for $52, which was a 220g piece of backstrap lamb with grilled vegetable salad and sauce persillade. It was very tender, with a delicate lamb flavour: not too fatty or gamey.

Finally, we got a side of broccolini with fermented chilli dressing and walnuts for $17.
Service
The service was good – expected and well paced. There were some insightful conversations at the start, frequent check ins by the sommelier to see how we were doing, and a good rhythm to the removal of finished plates.
Review
This was an enjoyable date night with an overload of good (buttery) food and good wine. We loved the omelette and will definitely return for this dish alone.
