Hector’s Deli is the current hyped trend in Melbourne this Jan-March. Everyone was racing to try their sandwiches, even flying from Sydney. 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♂️ Like us hehe. We tried to go during our December visit but they were closed, thanks to Covid 😥.
We were luckier this time, visiting at 2PM today and skipping the lunch rush, yasss.

Sandwich

I had high hopes for this to taste like the famous Bagel Bake in London but alas, the beef and pickles for $16.50 did not meet that desire.
It was still an awesome sandwich, with layers of tender Uncle’s Small Goods beef brisket mushed with strong tones of mustard pickle spread and topped off with hints of earthy and sour dill pickles in-between chews. These flavours were laid out generously on toasted light rye, making it a very satisfying bite.

We voted this one as our favourite. The tuna melt for $15 was a mouth-filling bite of the softest cooked tuna we’ve ever had 🤤.
It had an enjoyable and fragrant fishy flavour; definitely not that overwhelming fishy and oily taste of canned tuna. Most likely a freshly cooked tuna made in house, seasoned with pickled green chilli, white onions and salt. The melted American cheese rendered the bite further with an oozing, smooth texture. It was so satisfying to eat. We highly recommend this one.

This roast pork was a special of the day item for $15. It was slices of roasted pork, avocado, melted cheese and mushrooms. It was definitely the weakest sandwich of the three, lacking in an oomph of saucy flavours. It was a slightly dry bite thanks to the accompanied sourdough bread. Average.
Review
We loved the casual vibes of the space. The coffee was decent at Hector’s but not the main attraction of our visit, clearly. The service was bright and lovely.
If we lived in Melbourne and lived nearby, we would definitely be eating here for lunch on a regular basis. It’s worth the try but I’ve been told there are a few better sandwich spots in Melbourne so I will get back to you on the exclusives one day 😉.
Thank you for reading! Happy eating.
