Mick’s been gatekeeping this local eatery from me but I finally had a chance to try it back in June and oooft, it was a phatttt feed. Iiko Mazesoba offers a unique Japanese experience of brothless ramen for a reasonable price… Can’t believe the average cost for a meal is $30 now tho 😭 This style of ramen originated in Nagoya.
Food
We were most impressed by these brie tempura with truffle honey, 4 for $11. The sweet combination of honey and aromatic truffle was exquisite. Combined with the light crunchy batter of the tempura and creamy cheese… *insert drooling Homer Simpson*.
This was their signature chasu don; a $17 bowl of white rice, pork belly, onsen egg. shredded nori, roasted sesame seeds. The sauce was a thick viscous, with a nice blend of sweetness and umami. The onsen egg was the perfect gooey-ness, covering the udon in its creamy yolk. The chasu was well marinated and tender with an enjoyable glazed skin. I actually struggled to finish the bowl because of how rich it got towards the end.
Mick ordered the special duck mazesoba. This was housemade noodles, duck breast, duck liver croquette, onsen egg, nori, shallot, orange, sesame seed, chilli threads for $26. It was a very similar experience to the previous bowl, however the duck was a little more dry and chewy than the chasu. It was still good value and very filling.
Service
The service was more of a takeaway store style. Their target customers are corporate people who are looking for a quick lunch before heading back to work. The staff were very friendly.
Review
This is a spot we would revisit because they offer a dish that is very unique in Sydney.
