Kid Kyoto: Deluxe

This was one of those times when we tried an instagram trend and ended up disappointed that the food did not live up to the hype.

Kid Kyoto is a Japanese izakaya restaurant, located in Wynyard, Sydney. We ate here on a Friday night, of the last week of the Vivid Festival. We got a table at the bar and ordered the deluxe omakase, $75 per person for 9 dishes. I wished they didn’t call it an ‘omakase’ because it was more of a ‘tasting menu’.

omakase

We started with the lotus chips, nori cracker, wasabi salt. It was a yummy snack but the portion was so tiny, we were doubting whether this was a part of the omakase or if it was on the house. You can see in the next picture how small it was for two people.
It took twenty minutes before we saw our first proper dish: the kohlrabi sashimi, roasted pumpkin puree, kombu oil. This was our favourite of the night.

It was a nice blend of mild citric over raw fish. It had a sweet umami taste and was really delicious but because we were so hungry from the wait, we felt our experience soured the taste. If we knew this was the highlight of the omakase, we would have licked the plate clean. It was such a well-composed dish.
The kingfish sashimi, grapefruit, red kosho, puff rice dish arrived shortly after. Our favourite part was the puff rice. It added an interesting roast texture to the wet fish and vegetable combo. The sashimi had a moderately strong taste, cut through by the grapefruit’s acidity. This was another winner of the night.
This was the sticky corn ribs, chipotle miso jam, rice puff, togarashi. The chipotle miso jam had an interesting salted taste. Combined with the saffron, they brought forth the sweetness of the corn. The corn had a nice roasted coating and still retained its juices.
If you know me, you know I love takoyaki. This tacoyaki croquette, Katsuobushi mayo, tonkatsu sauce did not satisfy my craving.

Since they were going for the croquette style, the batter was too thick for my liking and I could feel the flour texture in every bite. It tasted like takoyaki-flavoured nuggets. I’m not fond of this Western version but this restaurant is a modern twist so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The grilled King Prawn, lime miso tare were well cooked. The prawn was juicy and delicious, with a slight chargrilled flavour. The size of it was what disappointed us. The stick was honestly the size of our finger. We were sucking the juices out of the head – that’s how small the prawn was. There was not enough meat to get our satisfaction out of this dish, especially since we had one prawn each.
At this point, we were still hungry and it had been about 90 minutes since we ordered. This ‘Chahan’ Japanese fried rice: pork or fish floss was $16 AUD on their à la carte menu and considered a “side” on their menu.

It tasted like rice and pork floss… the simple food a Vietnamese mum would throw together because she’s too lazy to cook. It was such a basic dish, with the lemon and furikake adding a bit of dimension to the taste but we felt this dish was put on the menu for budget reason.
The only “main” dish in the omakase was the caramelized pork hock, sweet apple jam, nori wakame sauce. The flavour was savoury and juicy. It was a very simple but delicious dish. If we were ordering it as à la carte for $28 AUD, it would be a good choice to share among friends.
After the staff cleared our dishes, it took another 30 minutes before our dessert showed up. We actually thought they had forgotten us. The matcha ganache with puff rice chocolate crumb, apple sorbet was delicious. We loved the sorbet. The apple flavour was not too sour or acidic or harsh. It had a smooth mild taste with the icy sorbet texture.

service

The wait staff were lovely however everything was very slow. We thought they had forgotten us a few times. And we were in this restaurant for 3 hours total when we were hoping for a quick dinner.

Keep in mind, we shared everything in these pictures. It was not like we got our own dish of everything. If we had ordered à la carte, it might have been a better experience. A lot of friends and foodies recommend the à la carte menu. We honestly regretted getting the omakase option 😔.

review

The mood of the restaurant was dimly lit, ideal for a date however the music was slightly too loud. We were seated at the bar, shoulder to shoulder, and we still had trouble hearing each other.

The dish choices were lacking excitement and uniqueness. Looking at other reviews from early 2018, like imstillhungry, we saw the food, price and quality had significantly decreased.

Would we go back? Only for à la carte.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating 😊.
