What we loved about Melbourne is the brunch game, with heaps of innovative and creative cafes scattered around the vibrant city. We love supporting new businesses and this month, we stumbled upon Lokall, a 2-month-old cafe. This cafe specialises in gourmet sandwiches and healthy lunch bowls.
FOOD
We got two signature thick-cut three cheese on Japanese white bread and a classic ham and cheese. These toasties were really rich and decadent with the perfect amount of grilled flavouring to them. They were $7 and $12, respectively, and as delicious as they were, it was a hefty price for a simple toastie. Overall, the toasties were worth our lactose-intolerant-bowel-movements but we would not get this on the regular.
This was the chicken katsu with red cabbage. The katsu serving was thicccc, with a few c’s 🤤. We loved the flavouring of the cabbage and teriyaki sauce but found the bite drying after a few chews. If there was an extra bowl of dipping sauce, it would have made this sandwich more satisfying.
This was a prawn baguette. It was very refreshing; the prawns were juicy. The bread had a nice crispy outer layer. The prawn crackers were crispy too, not drenched in oil and did not get soggy over time. Such a healthy dish.
This was the fish and salad. The batter on the fish was moderate, well-salted and crispy. The flesh was well-cooked and savoury. The salad did not have any fancy dressings (from memory) but we still enjoyed this healthy combination.
This was a dessert, off-menu, made by their pastry chef 😍 We didn’t get the exact description but from memory, it was chocolate mousse surrounding a fresh strawberry jelly inside, squashed between two biscuits. It was really good.
SERVICE
We enjoyed our experience at Lokall. We actually arrived at 2:35 PM when they were scheduled to close at 3 PM. Despite knowing we might be eating past their closing time, they never once rushed us and still gave us so much time to choose items off the menu and eat and talk. And to top it off, the pastry chef made that delicious dessert!
