We came across Mangkon Road during a random stroll in Sydney CBD. Located in Haymarket, this Chinese-Thai restaurant serves authentic flavours with the perfect amount of spice for the winter nights.
Food
This was pork satay: 4 sticks of char grilled satay pork skewers with arjard and satay sauce for $14. The pork was tender and chewy. The sauce was creamy with a good amount of sweetness and chilli. This was a simple and delicious starter for a reasonable price.
This starter was fried turnip rice cake with garlic chives and beansprouts for $12. It was another flavourful dish. The coating on these pillow-y rice cakes was savoury with a moderate amount of umami, balaned by the earthy coriander and refreshing beansprouts.
Okay this tom yum hot pot SLAPS 🔥. This was a spicy tomyum soup with tiger prawns and squid for $26. It was a very generous portion for 2 people. This tom yum was the most aromatic and perfect balance of sourness, hotness and saltiness. So good and soothing to the soul. The proteins were juicy and flavourful, soaking up all the soup. The only downside was the seafood was not the freshest. We ate this with vermicelli noodles.
Service
The service was typical of a Chinese restaurant. You order, get your food fast and hot, and then they leave you alone to enjoy it.
Review
We really enjoyed this place and it might be our new favourite spot for Thai food in the city (instead of Holy Basil). The food was delicious, service was fast and the prices were very affordable.
