This is an appreciation post for this “fast food” Japanese cuisine, i.e. udon and tempura. Marugame Udon is a popular spot in Honolulu with 9000+ 5/5 Google reviews, with queues out the door from opening to closing time. We loved the simplicity and humbleness of this dish so much, we dined here about 4 times during our short stay.
It doesn’t matter if it’s in Sydney (LINK), Tokyo (LINK) or Honoluolu, I will always order a hot bukkake udon with onsen egg. This is udon noodles in a umami soy-flavoured broth designed to cool the palate and tickle the tastebuds. In other words, it’s really friggin’ good, especially with the creamy egg, crispy tempura flakes and sliced scallions.
