Myeongdong Night Market

Myeong-dong is a popular suburb and shopping district in Seoul, South Korea. During the day there are a lot of fashion stores, dine-in restaurants and makeup sale assistants bribing you to visit their store with “free” face masks or tissues. During the night, food vendors set up shop and the streets are bustling with people hungry for some grilled food.

In 2017, we ate $120 worth of food because it was sooo cold, the only way we could keep warm was by ordering more and eating more. Tonight it was a lot warmer so I had more time to take photos of everything I ate.

TIP: You have to eat the food in front of the vendor because they will only accept rubbish for their own items. There are no rubbish bins in this shopping district.
The first stop was grilled butter and garlic prawns on a stick 🦐. The prawns were sweet and juicy, with a nice crispy texture. There was a mild spice with the garlic but tolerable for my basic palate. This was good and I wanted another one but I knew I had the whole street to explore.
YUM! 🦞 Grilled lobster with cheese for ₩1500. The first time we had this in 2017, it was so good we ordered 3 (equivalent to $50 total). This time around, I controlled myself and only ordered one fat mama 😣.

The meat was succulent and tender. The added layer of mozzarella cheese was lactic and creamy, with a thick cheese pull. This was our favourite thing to eat in the entire market.
This was grilled pork on a stick. The meat was dry and a little hard to chew. It was probably cooked for too long and had lost all of its savoury juices. I felt bad for throwing away the last piece in front of the guy…
I was getting thirsty from all the grilled foods so I stopped at a fruit bar for a blended mango and passion fruit juice. It was refreshing but a tad expensive at ₩7000 a bag.
This beast of a snack was grilled scallops with a layer of macaroni cheese. I was salivating watching it being made and smelling all that buttery goodness. There was probably 800 calories in this one snack but oooft, it was worth it! 🤤 The scallops were soft, sweet and creamy. This snack was every cheese lovers wet dream in a shell.
This was sausage wrapped in fishcake. The sausage had a sweet-savoury taste and retained its juices. The fishcake had a dried out chewy texture. The tomato sauce helped bring back moisture to the bite.
This was the traditional Korean seafood and kimchi pancake. The kimchi was a sweet and spicy flavour and tasted quite fresh. The batter was a thin, crispiness with a charred aftertaste. It was delicious and a great way to end the night.
Myeongdong is the go-to place to get all the Korean food seen in k-dramas so definitely give it a go if you visit Seoul. The markets start from around 6 PM.
