Saint Dreux

We had heard a lot about Saint Dreux over the last few years and when the opportunity arose to indulge in these premium sandwiches a fortnight ago, you bet we unbuttoned our pants and squeezed them in.

Saint Dreux is a sleek ready-to-go sandwich shop located in a food court in St. Collins Lane, Melbourne. Advertised on Broadsheet and Instagram, they pride themselves in katsu sandoitchi (Japanese pork cutlet sandwiches) and coffee.

We spent about $60 for 3 sandwiches, a coffee and a juice.
The origin of katsu sandoitchi is a simple concept of soft white bread, panko-crumbed fried pork cutlet, mayonnaise and tonkatsu sauce. This is the main concept behind Saint Dreux and definitely the star of our lunch.

This Kurobuta Pork for $18 was really crispy with a juicy and mouthwatering filling 🤤. The meat was perfectly tender, wrapped in an even layer of panko crumbs to give it that crisp texture, completed with a hint of wasabi and tonkatsu sauce. The bread was very soft and fluffy; the perfect bed for this piggy. Everything was balanced and delicious.

The price was a tad steep but that wouldn’t stop us from eating this again.
This Wagyu sandwich for $28 was quite disappointing when compared to the previous bite.

The wagyu piece was thick and juicy, but not as tender as we were hoping for. It required a bit of effort to separate a mouthful from the sandwich. We reckoned it was a lower grade of wagyu, like A2, maybe even A1, especially when compared to our last month’s indulgence of A5 Kagoshima (Kuro, Xmas, Akaiito, Steer and the Meat Emporium).

The wagyu flavour was there though, with the garnish of salt and pepper. The bread was nicely toasted inside, giving it this crisp, savoury texture. If it was a few dollars less, we’d eat it again but at this current price, it’s not worth it 🙅🏻‍♀️.
The Egg sandwich was $14 and unfortunately, does not taste like Japan 7/11 egg & mayo 😅. It was more of a cold egg souffle; the egg was very airy and jelly-like. We found the egg needed more sauce in-between itself because the bite dried up halfway through chewing it. This may be due to the thickness of the sandwich so a thinner slice would have made this a more portioned bite.

Service

There was not much to comment on their service because it was a takeaway store. Just friendly and quick, which was all we could ask for 👍🏻

Review

We thought the prices were a bit high for sandwiches. We did end up eating at Hawker Chan a few hours later so we rated Saint Dreux as more of a luxurious snack than a lunch. We noticed they had increased their prices in the last few years so if this continues, we probably would not eat it again.

Our final verdict is the pork katsu is worth it for $18.

Thanks for reading and happy eating! 😚
