Sydney, Australia 2020

As much as we love to travel, we love our home city too. We thought we’d share the favourite things we love about Sydney. This is our appreciation post of home because Covid has changed a lot of things 😅.

BEACHES

We know Sydney has some of the best sandy beaches, including the famous Bondi Beach (pictured above), Coogee, Palms Beach and Manly. There is an annual free art exhibition called Sculpture by the Sea, where we head out to do the Bondi to Coogee walk while admiring cool artwork.

If you’re wondering what the weather is like, it’s sunny 80% of the year…. Even in the middle of winter, our coldest temperatures are ~10°C. On the negative side, this means our summers are always scorching hot, with temperatures rising close to 50°C (exhibit A, the devastating Australian bushfires of 2020).

POOLS

Sydney has some unique pools by the ocean, for those who love to swim. This is the Bondi Icebergs Pool. If this spot is too crowded for your liking, head over to Malabar Ocean Pool 🏊🏻‍♀️.

COASTAL VIEWS

Sydney has a lot of costal views and we love to drive to one of these vantage points, admire nature and talk about life. Some of the places we’ve visited:

  • Vaucluse cliffs
  • Observatory Hills Park
  • Wendy’s Secret Garden
  • Mrs Macquarie Point
  • Barrenjoey Lighthouse

BLUE MOUNTAINS & THREE SISTERS

The blue mountains are famous for its blue hue and comprise a very large area of NSW. There are a lot of bushwalks/hikes in the Blue Mountain area, ranging from easy peasy to moderately difficult, and each awarding the hard work with some beautiful scenery.

Some of the ones we’ve done include:

  • Seeing the Three Sisters and Scenic World (above photos) – easy
  • Lincoln’s Rock – easy
  • Eagle’s Rock – moderate/hard
  • Belmore Falls (left waterfall pictured below) – moderate
  • Jumping Rock – moderate
  • Wedding Cake Rock – easy
  • Evans Lookout – moderate
  • Cascade Falls (next picture) – easy

BUSHWALKS / HIKES

SYDNEY FISH MARKET

We love going to the Fish Market and getting the freshest and creamiest seafood. It can get pricey so pick your wallet’s destruction carefully.

Our only tip is to never feed the seagulls. We’ve seen so many tourists fall for their trap. One flew towards us and picked at our sashimi box when I let my guard down 😭.

WOLLONGONG

Another thing we enjoy doing is driving an hour down to Woolongong to visit our friend, A. There is a lot of scenic things to do there, such as visit the biggest Buddhist temple in Australia (Nan Tien, pictured above), Kiama farmers market and go on bush walks, like Sublime Point Lookout (pictured above).

There are plenty of other day-trips and weekend-trips with scenery and good food that can be made in NSW.

CABRAMATTA

cabramatta
There is a whole suburb dedicated to the freshest and yummiest Vietnamese, Chinese, and Cambodian food. We’re talking grilled snails, balut, fermented shrimp noodles, sugar cane juice… all the good foods you can only get in their home country can be found in Cabramatta.

Vivid

Vivid is the annual winter light show in the CBD. We love getting a little tipsy, heading out for the food stalls and basking in the beautiful displays so many artists had worked on all year.

DARLING HARBOUR

There are a lot of fun things to do, restaurants to eat at and bars to drink at in Sydney CBD. Chinatown holds a weekly night market. The Darling Harbour used to shoot fireworks every night at 9 PM and midnight pre-Covid. And the Chinese Gardens and Hyde Park have beautiful scenery to get lost in during a lunch break.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE

Of course, it’s not Sydney without a photo of the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House. What a beauty!
