Tetsujin

We had a different plan tonight but unfortunately, that fell through so we were stranded with hunger. It was also a little difficult finding a restaurant last-minute as most places were closed or booked out.

Luckily, I found Tetsujin and everything was coming up Milhouse. Tetsujin is an urban Japanese restaurant in Melbourne, with a 4.3-star Google rating, doing half sushi train and half JBBQ. They were open on the last day of 2020, accepting walk-ins only on the sushi side.

This is more of an appreciation post because we had 30 plates of fresh seafood and the bill was only $100 😍.

Food

I didn’t take a photo but some of the common dishes we indulged on were:
  • 6 salmon nigiri
  • 4 chutoro nigiri
  • 4 otoro nigiri
  • 2 grilled unagi nigiri
  • salmon roe gunkan maki, pictured above
  • 2 white fish nigiri
  • salmon, avocado and mayo roll
  • 6 scallop nigiri
  • 2 aburi salmon nigiri
🤤🤤🤤🤤
We were shook to see they served sea urchin in gunkan maki 😍 Considering the cost of uni, wee had never come across this in any sushi train in Australia so this was such a pleasant surprise. We had 4 portions (8 pieces) between us LOL.
Speaking of sea urchin, they served a slab of fresh uni on a plate… 🤤🤤🤤 This was a generous portion for $5, considering the amount usually served at omakase and fine dining restaurants. It was fresh and mildly briny and so worth it that we ordered another one each.
Tetsujin even serves scampi! 🦐 This was so creamy and soft, garnished with the delicious salty tobiko roe. We ordered two each hehe.
I liked that the salmon sashimi was served with soy sauce, spring onions and roasted sesame seeds. There aren’t many sushi trains that do this.

Drink

Tetsujin also has a bar on the JBBQ side so there was a variety of cocktails to choose from. The blue cocktail was a vodka soda with a sinking titanic ship 😆 and the red one was a whiskey sour. Both were easy to drink and elevated our moods. In fact, we left in such high spirits that we decided to turn back around to the bar and order another 3 cocktails to celebrate the end of 2020 LOL.

Service

The staff were accommodating and efficient, adhering to social distancing rules. All the dishes we ordered off the tablet arrived at a fast pace.

Review

We’d definitely come back for another round of this gourmet sushi train. Everything was so fresh and delicious. The reasonable bill at the end had us dancing on the way out 😂.

Their JBBQ menu was equally as extensive as the sushi menu, with sukiyaki, tapas, oysters, fried chicken and wagyu. We definitely want to try this too.

Thanks so much for reading! Happy eating into 2021!
