The Wood Restaurant

Brokenwood is a large cellar door with an outdoor terrace, private tasting and dining rooms, a wine museum and restaurants, such as The Wood. We had the luxury to dine here on Saturday 29th February 2020 for a late lunch, after our fun wine tasting at Ivanhoe (LINK).

ENTRÉE

To start the meal, we were served freshly baked sourdough. It had a nice crunchy crust with a pleasant aroma and moist mouthfeel.
burrata
burrata
We ordered the burrata with nectarine, with basil pepitas, summer tomatoes and aleppo pepper. There is also a gluten free option for this dish. We loved the burrata. It was fresh and soft. The mozzarella was quite mild in flavour on its own. The added vegetables and nectarine flavouring were a nice touch to the burrata, creating a fruity and sweet flavour.
beef tartare

This was the grass-fed beef tartare, with capers, miso, egg, roast eggplant, and Parmesan palmier. We loved breaking the yolk because it was so pretty to watch the colours mix. The tartare was sweet, almost creamy (thanks to the yolk), and mildly seasoned. It went well with the palmier pastry, giving a beautiful contrast in textures. It was a really delicious snack that was not too overwhelming, making us want more and more 😍. We voted this as our favourite dish of the meal.

MAIN COURSE

This was the Moroccan spiced Queensland prawns, with kataifi, salt cod Scotch egg, dukkah, chermoula and cucumber yogurt. The Scotch eggs were well cooked inside the nice crunchy potato batter. It was a mild and dry bite on its own. The prawns were fresh and tasty, elevating the egg with its juices. The thick creamy yogurt added a light hint of acidity to the bite.

Finally, we got the 250g wagyu 6+ sirloin to share. It was served with smoked bone marrow, mustard and Lancashire cheese croquettes, roast tomato, cafe de Paris, and jus. This was a good steak, chewy and savoury, but not a memorable piece of meat. Don’t get us wrong, it was delicious but there was nothing mind-blowing about it – just a good steak.

The bone marrow was spiced and baked, cutting through its richness with the crunchy layer on top. We really liked the contrasting bits. The tomato had been roasted and retained all its juicy flavours without wetting the other components. The croquettes were really appetizing, with a tasty crunchy layer and soft insides.

We didn’t get dessert because we had our friend’s wedding to attend (LINK).

REVIEW

We loved the view of The Wood restaurant. It had a soothing, chillax atmosphere – a great place to have a bottle of wine and enjoy the weekend. There was lots of space in the dining area, and lots of parking spaces too.

The food was great. We give an overall rating of 8.3 out of 10. We wouldn’t mind coming back to try the other dishes if we ever visit Hunter Valley again.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating! 😆
