Tonkatsu Wako

Tonkatsu Wako is a chain restaurant in Japan, specializing in とんかつ (tonkatsu); a breaded and fried pork cutlet, often served with cabbage and miso soup. We had lunch at their Shinjuku location on our way to Yokohoma today.

Food

We got a crab cream croquette and 2 chicken croquettes to share as an entrée. The meat was soooo tender and juicy, like holy fek 🤤. The Japanese know what they’re doing with their meats. Each piece of meat was perfectly capsulated in a thin layer of light, non-oily, crispy batter. And the cheesy cream filling in the crab croquette was appetizing, adding a buttery element to the already perfect piece of tempura.
I ordered the kaki warasemase, which was a fried prawn, two fried pork cutlets and 3 fried oysters. It was delicious! 😍 The tempura prawn was juicy and full of flavour inside the crispy bread crumb batter. The oysters were not overwhelming in odour and still had a creamy texture despite being boiled and fried. The accompanied miso soup was very savoury with small bits of clams.
Aaron ordered the rosuatsu nabe gohan, which was a freshly fried pork cutlet cooked in soy sauce, flavoured soup and an egg. It arrived with two salads and a bowl of rice. The soup was nice to slurp down, with the fluffy egg pieces encasing the pork with moderate umami and sweet flavour. We loved it.
Mick ordered a pork cutlet in a set with rice, miso soup and pickled vegetables. I only took one photo so I’m not too sure on the exact name of the dish but flavour and texture-wise, it was perfecto 👌🏻

Service

The service was exceptional, as expected of Japan. The staff were very friendly and attentive, noticing right away we were tourists 😅.

Review

Every piece of protein had a perfectly crispy exterior and a juicy flavourful interior. It was so delicious! We had a great time and will definitely go back during our next visit.

Until then, happy eating! 😄
