Uncle Don

We are slowly exploring the Brisbane food scene and on our annual trip up north, our first stop was Uncle Don. This was a delightful little joint with a variety of Japanese dishes and beers.

Food

This was one of the best pork katsu sando we’ve had at a restaurant and outside of Japan. The pork cutlet was juicy and tender, with a perfect crispy layer of batter. The cabbage slaw was refreshing and added the right amount of balance without overdoing it on the mayonnaise . And the bread was fluffy. This was $16.
Our friend ordered the wagyu steak don for $42. This consisted of MBS 7-8+ wagyu steak, teriyaki sauce, rice, a soft cooked free range egg, roasted nori flakes and spring onions. He said it was savoury and delicious.
Mick got the spicy pork don for $22. This was marinated pork on steamed rice, with soft cooked free range egg, pickled ginger and spring onions. He said it was similar to the Budakon we had in Tokyo, Japan (LINK).
This was the gyudon, sweet soy marinated beef on rice with a soft cooked egg, roasted nori flakes and spring onions for $22.
And I had the salmon scallop don for $27. This was a special, with grilled salmon, prawns, scallop and fish roe on top of rice. It was straightforward and delicious but I ended up getting food poisoning from it because we dined at 2:30 pm so the seafood could have been out all day and gotten contaminated. C’est la vie

Service

The server was really friendly and attentive. The staff let us sit around until 3pm (uclosing time) which was very kind of them.

Review

If we lived in Brisbane, we would come back here often for that pork katsu sandwich.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating!
