Vecino

Spotted on Urban List Sydney, this new eatery has been taking the locals by storm with their unique Korean x Mexican menu – the best of both worlds. We dined as a group of 6 and found the menu crafty, delicious and fulfilling.

Food

The honey cream prawn tacos was the best dish of the day. It was 3 tacos for $19.50, with fried prawn honey mayo glazed, mixed cabbage, pico de gallo, and lime juice. The taco shells were soft, contrasting nicely with the crunch of the flavourful prawn. There was a good ratio of all ingredients. And the avocado and mayo was the perfect adornment to give this bite the right amount of creaminess.
On the left was the bulgogi tacos (3 for $18.50). This was marinated beef in Korean style soy sauce, mixed cabbage, pico de gallo, teriyaki sauce, sour cream, guacamole, salsa and jalapeno. This was a little dry and a tad bland. It needed more bulgogi sauce.

And on the right was stir fried spicy pork tacos (3 for $18.50s). This was marinated Korean style spicy pork, mixed cabbage, pico de gallo, gochujang aioli, sour cream, guacamole, salsa and jalapeno. It was moderately spicy and flavourful, but also a little dry.
The beef nachos for $17.80 was a generous serving of nachos, Mexican-styled minced beef, liquid cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, Mexican salsa and sour cream. This was one of the better nachos we’ve had, with a lot of flavours and juices on the crispy tortilla chips.
The bulgogi burrito for $16 was huge, and a great value for those wanting a quick lunch. This was beef in Korean style soy sauce, Mexican rice, mixed cheese, sliced cabbage, guacamole, pico de gallo, black beans, teriyaki sauce and sour cream served with salsa and marinated jalapeno. Our friends took this for takeaway so we don’t know how it tasted but visually, it looked good 😂 .
The fried chicken was a little smaller than what we expected from the images on the menu. On the left was the vecino gourmet fried chicken ($19 for half), 48-hours marinated chicken with herbs and spices, served with chips. And on the right was sweet spicy chicken ($20 for half), vecino gourmet fried chicken with sweet and spicy sauce. The chickens were moist and the fried skin was crispy, but none of us had this fresh so we can’t comment on the quality. We were all so full from everything else 😂.
This was chicken quesadillas for $18.50. It had grilled chicken, basil pesto, tomato, mozzarella, Parmesan, cheddar cheese, drizzled sour cream with pico de gallo. The chicken was succulent, and there was a good ratio of ingredients making this bite a light and enjoyable one.
Alas, a plain and simple cheese stick and chips for $14. We recommend getting them because the chicken salt and snow cheese flavouring on top was bomb.

Drinks

The cocktails were really nice with a strong taste of alcohol. All was very refreshing and went well with this heavy meal.

Review

We really liked the Korean and Mexican crossover. The food was above average, cooked well and incorporated flavours from both cultures respectfully. The service at the Canterbury location was top notch.

Thanks for reading. Happy eating 🌮.
